Great Sunday, more on the tournament later!

Skins with Donald

Donald Trump is ready to take on another project: Beating two of the LPGA’s best on the golf course.

Trump will team with eight-time major champion Tom Watson to face world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam and rising star Natalie Gulbis in a skins game on Oct. 22 at a course on Governors Island designed specifically for the event.

Tigers sense of humour

I also sent a short text message to Annika Sorenstam that read: 11. When she recently won her 10th major on the LPGA Tour, she couldn’t wait to text me. Guess I’m 1-up now.

Deutsche Bank Players Championship on the way

By the way, does the tournament title qualify for the longest tournament title on the tour? “The Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe” it even reads on the PGA European Tour website.

Anyway, some three hours ago the first players went onto their rounds (see tee times here), the current leader is frenchman Gregory Havret at six under, one shot clear of Retief Goosen, who already shot an eagle at 15. You can follow the live scoring on the tournaments website or on the PGA European Tour website.

For more information there is even a downloadable PDF-mag on the tournament website with all the Daily News.  Oh, and the Daly news is: he is two over after a miserable start with par, bogey, double-boge, bogey on the first four holes.

Audi Shoot-Out

The tournament week at the Deutsche Bank Players Championship starts today with the Audi Shoot-Out.

As of 16:30 ten pros – amongst them Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, John Daly – will start in twosomes to see who is the best in a KO-competition on a shortened round. Admission is free, so take your chance to see them live.

Golf TV weekly

Isn’t it funny? There is hardly any golf coverage on german television during the year and suddenly there is a tournament in germany and you cannot escape it. More of that during the rest of the year, please. Anyway, it will give me a good preparation before I go there on Sunday myself.

An interview with the Open Champion

STEWART McDOUGALL: Ladies and gentlemen, Tiger Woods, 2006 Open champion (applause).

Tiger, you’ve defended your championship very successfully. How do you feel at this stage? How do you feel now?

TIGER WOODS: Wow, I don’t know where to begin. I just excited, worn out, just so many different emotions to describe right now because I guess it all came out on 18.

But overall it was such a if you’re looking at it just from a golf standpoint, it was such a difficult week, with the fairways and greens being as hard and fast, and Chris playing just beautiful golf today. He just kept putting the pressure on me in the group behind. I just had to continue to try to be patient, make birdies whenever I could, but just whatever I do, just don’t drop a shot and give him any momentum.

And it didn’t quite work out that way. I bogeyed 14 and I believe I bogeyed 12 and he birdied 13. So two shot swing right there. I guess it just then I got hot there at 14, 15, 16, which was nice to give myself a little bit of a cushion playing 17 and 18, because obviously anything can happen on 18. I was able to play it basically stress free.

Q. Can you talk about the emotion on 18, with Stevie there? Did that surprise you that you let it out, let loose like that?

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, I’ve never done that. You know me. So it’s just I guess all the things that we’ve gone through of late and I guess I’m kind of the one who bottles things up a little bit and moves on, tries to deal with things in my own way.

But at that moment it just came pouring out and of all the things that my father has meant to me and the game of golf, and I just wish he could have seen it one more time. I was pretty bummed out after not winning The Masters, because I knew that was the last major he was ever going to see. So that one was that one hurt a little bit. And finally to get this one, and it’s just unfortunate that he wasn’t here to see it.

11

Congrats, Tiger!

An interview with Tiger Woods after Round 3

STEWART McDOUGALL: Ladies and gentlemen, Tiger Woods, 71, 13 under par and leading The Open Championship by one shot.

Tiger, the field is really bunched up at the top today. What’s the reason for that?

TIGER WOODS: The golf course is pretty quick. These are some surprisingly the most difficult pins today that I’ve ever seen in The Open Championship to date, and it was a good challenge trying to get the ball close. I really had to hit some quality shots. And on the greens out there you really had to watch your pace because obviously every green is just a slightly different speed. You had to be aware of it.

Q. You’ve said all week about how you want to take what the golf course gives you. Will that still be your philosophy tomorrow and did that change at all today?

TIGER WOODS: It didn’t really change. Well, I hit 3 wood on the 11, which I probably could have hit 2 iron, just trying to make sure I carried the mound. It was 250 into the wind, trying to carry it over the top. Other than that I played to about the same spots.
