PGA Championship at Medinah

Another Major Week coming up with the PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club (satellite view) starting thursday.

The first big surprise surely was the pairing of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (see full list of round 1 & 2 teetimes and pairings).

The second big surprise I discovered last night and it was the rather unusual obstacle the Medinah CC put up on the 16th fairway of Course #2, an airplane directly in the landing zone of the hole:

(no kidding, check it out on Google Earth)

To follow the championship, there are various possibilities:

  • place the tournaments newsfeed into your feedreader,
  • the official website with live scoring, or
  • the TNT Webcast at pga.com
  • Especially the webcast should be interesting:

In a first for a U.S. golf event, Turner Network Television (TNT) and PGA.com, one of golf’s leading interactive Web sites, will partner to bring golf fans inside the ropes with 11 hours of live coverage featuring TNT and CBS’ on-air announcers, camera coverage and editorial content as they call the 2006 PGA Championship from Medinah (Ill) Country Club.

The coverage tees off on Thursday and Friday, August 17-18, with PGA.com simulcasting six hours of TNT’s on-air content with coverage from 2-5 p.m. ET for both the first and second rounds. Also, PGA.com will webcast five additional hours of bonus coverage from the first two rounds of the championship. The exclusive bonus coverage will stream on Thursday and Friday from 12:30-2 p.m. ET, and then again on Saturday and Sunday from 10-11 a.m. TNT broadcast partner CBS will follow late-round coverage on Saturday and Sunday to the championship’s conclusion.

Check out the website for more interesting stuff like the video tour of the course, the story of the Medinah Country Club and the video section with interviews.

Regarding the pairing of Tiger and the Lefty, their third man is Geoff Ogilvy, and that makes it the three major winners this season. Ogilvy has won the US Open, Mickelson the Masters, and Tiger the British Open. And at the PGA Championship they always do this in the opening rounds, pair the current major champions in one flight.

But looking at the open dislike between Tiger and Mickelson this should be interesting to watch.

Olin Browns hole on one on the par3 17th sure is interesting to watch: http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2006/video/# – the ball doesn’t even touch the green and goes directly into the cup!
