Ponte Vecchio Challenge

Florence is well known for its rich cultural history, impressive buildings like the Dome, the Galleria dell’Uffizie or the Ponte Vecchio, crossing the river Arno.

The latter is once a year venue to a rather unusal golfing event: the Ponte Vecchio Challenge. From the central arch of Florence’s historic bridge, golf professionals attempt to land their approaches on greens floating in the River Arno.

The starting field comprises 15 players representing 15 nations, amongst them Bernhard Langer for Germany, Robert Karlsson from Sweden (who won the event in 2005) and Raphael Jaquelin for France. Playing in a match play format, each player will have six shots per match and have to centre three islands, positioned at distances inversely proportional to their score value (2, 3 or 4 points). The winner is he who, by centering the greens/islands, scores the highest number of points.

The Ponte Vecchio Challenge is also featured in the current European Tour Weekly report. Enjoy!
