100 years of Golf in Germany

The 26. May 1907 the German Golf Association (Deutscher Golfverband) was founded in Hamburg. For the 100th anniversary, the Jungfernstieg in Hamburg is being converted into a golf park. This whole week, you can join the party and entertain yourself with various golf competitions like the “Nearest to the 100″ where you have to hit a floating green in the Binnenalster.

Check out the full programme at http://www.golf.de/100jahredgv/ and the After-Work-Golf.net event friday night.

Comeback of the short game?

One thing hasn’t changed about golf and no onslaught of technology can change it: the short game. There is no man-made, space metal solution to a 60-yard pitch over water to a tucked pin on a shallow green.

Laying up or going for the green? Brandon Tucker over at worldgolf.com predicts the comeback of the short game.

Currently, my fairway shots are the best part of my game, but the thing that helps me score the most is definitely the short game. PW, SW and LW are my best friends from 100m and less. How do you rate the aspect of the short game in your game? Speak to me!

My personal Mt. Everest

There are some holes on the courses I play more frequently that seemed to be cursed. Amongst the top-ranking ones is the second hole of GC Kallin.

The par 3 measures 151 meters (165 yards), the fairway is just a small strip of land between three lakes and the right side and back of the hole is OB. This is my personal #17 @ Sawgrass (satellite view).

Normally, to hit a ball 150 meters straight is absolutely no problem. Take a normal swing with a six iron and you are there. Not on this hole. Just a little push and you are OB, the slightest slice or hook lands you automatically in the drink. Yesterday, I managed both. First ball OB, second in the drink just three meters short of the green. Too bad, as the second one was perfectly aligned and went directly towards the flag. If he wouldn’t have lacked the last meters. Ended up with a seven. I have never managed to play #2 better than double-bogey.

But the day will come when I play this sucker par or birdie. I will get you, #2, you hear me?

Golf bags & girls

I guess when a girl obsessed with handbags develops an obsession with golf, it’s only natural that she will start to collect golf bags.

The Golfchick about golf bags, only in a way a girl can write about it. I am not forwarding this to my wife, she might use it as an excuse to buy more golf bags. ;-)
