Rain Break

Looking out the window it really started to rain heavily, so I’ll probably skip the driving range session that I originally planned for tonight. I cannot remember when it last rained here, we had weeks of pure sunshine and the dryest April since the recording of weather data. And remember, this is Germany, not Egypt.

It’s probably better this way, as we had a high risk of forest fires and the golf courses were hard as hell.

Wachovia Championship Interviews

STEWART MOORE: We welcome 2007 Wachovia Championship winner Tiger Woods to the media center here at the Wachovia Championship. Tiger, great round, final round 69 ties the low round of the day, and in winning today you pick up 4,500 FedEx points and vault into No. 1 on the season-long list.
If you could maybe talk a little bit about your round today, if you could hit the birdies and the bogeys and what it means to finally win this tournament.

TIGER WOODS: I guess I got off to the most ideal start on that front nine. I was 5-under through 9. I felt like I was playing decent, but I was making everything, which was nice. The back nine, I struggled a little bit, missed a short one there at 10, which was a really disappointing bogey considering I only had 78 yards to the hole. It’s just inexcusable.
Then made a nice little comeback birdie at the next hole, 11. Then after that 13 was just not very good, a terrible 4-iron out to the right. Pitched it long, first putt I hit way too hard, and the second putt I pulled.
But my whole goal coming in after that was to try to get the lead through 15, and if I had the lead through 15, I figured if I parred in I’d probably win the tournament because these conditions you figure probably no one is going to play those three last holes under par.

So I had the lead after 15, and I figured if I just played the last three holes even par, I’d be golden.

    Telecom Italia Open 1st round

BANG! What a blistering start Joakim Bäckström had in his first round at the Telecom Italia Open:

    Telecom Italia Open

Two eagles, six birdies and ten pars add up to a 62 and gives Bäckström a three shot lead over James Heath. The course record by the way is a 61 (-11), held by Ian Poulter and Angel Cabrera since 2002 Apparently, Bäckström shot the course record with his 62, the information that I got from the European Tour website wasn’t accurate.

Martin Kaymer is -3 through 18 (T16), Marcel Siem is s -3 through 8 (T16), Erol Simsek is -1 through 7, Sven Strüver tees off at 14:20. Speaking of Erol Simsek, who is this guy?

    Golf Truisms

Don’t buy a putter until you’ve had a chance to throw it.

Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

If you’re afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.

The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.

No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.

The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to ompensate for all of your many other errors.

If it ain’t broke, try changing your grip.

Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponents’ luck.
