What a great way to end the weekend

O, ok, I am taking back all complaints about not playing birdies, today round gave me two really spectacular ones. After bringing my wife to the airport, I chose to hit GC Stolper Heide for an evening round of golf as it was the nearest one.

Originally, I wanted only to play a quick nine holes, but in weekends they only sell full 18 hole rounds. Also to guys arriving at 18:20 like me. So I bought a sundowner tarrif, 30 Euros for 18 holes with a tee time at 19:00. Ok, you can squeeze in 18 holes in 2,5 to 3 hours playing alone with an empty course ahead of you. But the course wasn’t empty.

What the heck, I started a little early at 18:30 without warming up. Solid bogeys for the first two holes. Then came hole 3, 156m par 3 and the venue of my first “Nearest to the pin”. Six iron pinhigh, but a little left in the rough with a downhill lie. The chip landed perfectly and rolled gently towards the pin and fell.

Enthused by this great shot I went on to play the 478m par5 that followed. After my second shot I had some 135m left to the green, I pushed my seven iron some 10m to the right of the green and found my ball in the deep rough, the grass was almost knee high. I had some 15m to the pin, so I grabbed my lobwedge and tried my best. Tight grip, powerful swing and follow-through, the ball took of nicely, was perfectly aligned with the flag…. and with a solid “plock” it went directly into the cup without even bothering of touching the green. I was totally stunned and didn’t realize what had happened. This is the stuff that normally happens on TV when you see the big guys play, and now I did that? That was my first birdie on a par 5 also. What a great one it was!

The rest of the round didn’t matter, I ran into Mario and later Elena and we ended the round as a threesome shortly before 22:00, turning the lights off at the course. I think I’ll sleep well tonight.
