Older readers might remember my trip to the Snow Golf World Championship this January. Despite the not so good weather conditions, it was loads of fun. These days, the announcement for the 2008 event went out and the venue has been changed to Obertauern (Austria), one of the snow-richest places in Austria. Fairways and Whites should be in much better conditions than this year.

But the organisers Annabell and Christian Hölzl also modified the format. This year it was an individual competition, but 2008 will see a two player scramble format. The entry fee for a two man team is 500,00 € per team (plus tax), this will cover the tournament, participation in the players nihgt and champions nights parties. Travel and lodging go extra. Play format: Two Person Scramble team valuation under Stableford Rules (9 holes). Two golfers form a team.

Player’s Field: max. 65 teams (130 amateurs)

SNOWGOLF arena “Gnadenalm”: The 9 hole Championship Course (Par 35) is built into the landscape around the “Gnadenalm”, creating a dreamlike snow-scape in Obertauern´s impressive mountain region. The snow fairways are prepared by snow machines, with out of bounds set by natural deep snow. The putting surfaces (“Whites”) are prepared by hand.

Oh boy was it cold and windy this morning (just above 0° Celsius) and did I play poorly! But you know what? I didn’t care. I was out golfing the first time in five weeks. I hadn’t touched a club since somewhere in October.

I had been on a three day conference this week and had not breathed fresh air or had the smallest break in that time. So just being on the golf course this morning was the greatest gift I could make myself! Boy, did it feel good!

Damn, I wanted to write this insightful post about the Golf World Cup taking place this week in Chinas humongous Mission Hills Golf Club. Unfortunately, I’m on the road, so you’ll have to settle with some quick facts.

Defending champion is Germany, as Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem won the trophy last year. To defend it, Martin “European Tour Rookie of the year” Kaymer will team up with Alex “I can’t believe I didn’t have to go through Q-School” Cejka.

Die Berlin-Brandenburger Golflandschaft steht womöglich vor einer großen Neuordnung. Unter dem Projektnamen Golf-Dome ist eine Investorengemeinschaft derzeit in Gesprächen mit 14 Berliner Golfclubs mit dem Ziel, diese Clubs aufzukaufen und unter einem Dach zusammenzuführen. Als erster Golfclub hat das Golfresort Semlin am See an die Investoren verkauft, mit fünf weiteren Clubs sei man kurz vor em Abschluss.

Nicht betroffen sein werden aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach die Mitgliederclubs Wannsee, Kallin und Gatow. Der Sporting Club Berlin in Bad aarow ist wahrscheinlich auch aussen vor, da er in Hand der A-Rosa-Gruppe ist.

Die Investitionen belaufen sich nach Informationen der Berliner Morgenpost auf rund 100 Millionen Euro. Wie sich diese Riesen-Investition amortisieren soll, ist noch unklar. Fakt ist jedoch, daß die meisten Berlin-Brandenburger Golfclubs defizitär wirtschaften. Laut Aussage des Beraters Falk Billion muss keiner der Golfspieler Angst haben, “…daß sein Club verschwindet oder die Beiträge drastisch steigen”. Geplant würde über einen Zeitraum von 15 Jahren, dann müssten Gewinne erzielt werden.

Ein Risiko besteht natürlich in der dann gestiegenen Marktmacht eines Anbieters, der dann über mehrere Golfanlagen Greenfee- und Mitgliedspreise diktieren kann. Dies sei aber nicht Absicht der Investorengemeinschaft, so Billion. Vielmehr sollten über Verbungsmitgliedschaften den Golfern ermöglicht werden, mehrere Anlagen zu spielen und so mehr Abwechslung zu erfahren. Ziel sei auch, mehr Menschen für den Sport zu gewinnen, denn gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl sei Berlin-Brandenburg die Region mit dem geringsten Anteil an Golfspielern (15.000 Spieler verteilt auf 22 Golfclubs). Über steigende Mitgliederzahlen sollen sich dann auch die Investitionen der Golf-Dome Investoren amortisieren.

Rumour has it that the European Tour plans a sucessor of Valderrama as season-ending event. Apparently, Dubai throws in some 14 Mio. Euros as prize money for a season-ending tournament. This might help the European Tour winning some players back from the PGA Tour. Let’s see if it helps.

The partnership will run initially for five years, with an option to extend for a further five years, and will include the creation of the end-of-season Dubai World Championship; an additional annual US$10,000,000 Bonus Pool; significant support for selected European Tour events; funding of The European Tour’s Physio Truck; the construction of a new International Headquarters for The European Tour at Jumeirah Golf Estates; and the creation of a global property company, in a joint initiative with Leisurecorp, to develop new tournament venues around the world.

The inaugural Dubai World Championship will take place from 19-22 November, 2009, on either the Fire or Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, UAE, with the winner earning US$1,666,660 from the US$10,000,000 prize fund.

Wo gibt’s denn heute noch etwas umsonst? Geschweige denn eine Trainerstunden von einem der profiliertesten Golflehrer Deutschlands, Oliver Heuler? Auf golf.de habe ich das Aktionsangebot entdeckt, genau das richtige um in der Wintersaison an den Fehlern zu feilen und gut gerüstet in die neue Saison zu starten (wer den Fehler im linken Bild entdeckt, darf ihn behalten).

Um zur eigenen Analyse zu kommen müsst ihr mindestens zwei Bilder von Eurem Schwung, besser noch ein Video einschicken:

Sie können entweder 10 seitlich aufgenommene Bilder sowie 10 Frontalaufnahmen einschicken – oder, noch besser, Video-Aufnahmen. Die Aufnahmen sollten durch ausführliche Ballflugbeschreibungen ergänzt werden:
* Wie sehen die typischen Fehlschläge aus?
* Wohin startet und dreht der Ball mit Wedges, Eisen und Hölzern?
* Wohin zeigen die Divots und wie sehen die aus?
* Mit welchem Teil des Schlägers wird der Ball oft getroffen?
* Wie hoch und wie weit fliegen die Bälle?

I just bumped into this page on pgatour.com, where they put together the video highlights of the 2007 season in different categories. Quite entertaining, brilliant golf shots. I liked the holes-in-one-collection best.
