Two Golf-Generations in Augusta

Mercedes-Benz.tv features a report on Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer at the 2008 Masters. Ok, there are accidentially a couple of Benzes visible, but also some nice shots of Augusta.

Masters Quote of the Day

“It took me half an hour [to lead the Masters] – it can’t be that difficult.”
Debutant Nick Dougherty laughs off his mixed opening of 74 after racing to two under with two birdies in his first three holes.

Early Bird Golf

I just returned from a two day conference held in Semlin am See. The club also features a hotel where our conference was held. The problem was, that the conference schedule left no room for a round of golf as the agenda was so packed.

Watching the sun set over the course from my hotel room last night I decided to set my clock early to fit some nine holes in before our conference continued at 08:30 this morning. So I got up shortly after 06:00 and was on the first tee at 06:45. Of course was I tired after the short night, but there was this beautiful, morning dew-covered course in front of my that I had all by myself.

And what a nice round it turned out, solid rhythm in my swing, nice distance feel while putting on the moist greens. Four putts lipped out or stopped millimeters before the cup. That could have shaped some extra strokes off the score. For the first time in over a year I played better than my current handicap. Hooray! And after an hour I came back to the hotel and bumped into my colleagues, they wondered what the heck I was doing up so early. Maybe the big grin on my face explained everything.

It’s Masters Week

The 2008 US Masters are on their way and with two time champion Bernhard Langer and European Tour Rookie of the Year Martin KAymer we have two players in the field. Bernhard made the field as Masters champion, Martin mad it as one of the “Top 50 players from world ranking published a week before the 2008 Masters”. The Golf Channel has a list of all 93 players by category, if you want to check that out.

The Golf In Context Journal has some player pics from yesterdays practice round, more pics to come.

Golf Club Kitzeberg

This week I was invited to play one of the oldest german golf clubs, the GC Kitzeberg in Kiel. Apparently, it is the oldest golf club in Germany founded by germans. It was established in 1902 and is also founding member of the german golf association DGV.

The club is situated in the terminal moraine landscape formed in the last ice age. Unusual for the rather flat terrain of northern germany, this course really appeals to the hill climber in you. The course originally consisted out of nine holes, the back nine have been added in the year 2000. So the front nine show the good old spirit of a parkland course with some drastic elevation changes ans mostly narrow fairways guarded by trees left and right. Six of the nine holes on the front nine are doglegs, so a solid iron play comes in more handy than a bombing drive.

The back nine – the newer holes – feature a more open landscape and a less hilly layout. The holes still are demanding and interesting, like the 16th, a 560m long par 5, tunring into a dogleg left at the end. You need two excellent shots and a lie to the right of the fairway to have a decent shot at the green. I had a lie on the left side of the fairway and had to clear various trees on my way to the green that is also protected by water.

The most interesting finishing hole I played so far has to be #18 in Kitzeberg. It is a double dogleg left, narrow with water in the middle on both sides of the fairway and uphill towards the end. It is basically wrapped around the clubhouse. A spectacular finish to a great golf round.

Greenfees are 40,00 € on weekdays and 50,00 € on weekends. It is money well spent on an interesting golf course.
