Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer met Yahoo Inc.’s chief executive Jerry Yang for a round of golf this past weekend to discuss a deal for Yahoo’s search-advertising business. But there was no indication that the software titan remained interested in acquiring Yahoo outright, people familiar with the matter said.

Messrs. Ballmer and Yang are both avid golfers. The game this weekend was a way to bring the two together in a friendly setting, says one of the people familiar with the matter.

I just found out, that Ian Poulter had to pick up spare-time work to make ends meet: he is serving as a flyer dispenser in the golf shop around the corner!

The LET makes its only stop in Germany this season. The ladies tee up at Golfpark Gut Häusern this week, playing the HVB Ladies German Open. Alongside the best players from Germany, Michelle Wie decided to stop by for the tournament (read more here and here).

Michelle is paired with Martina Eberl and commenced her round at 09:00 this morning. Bettina Hauert is in the following flight alongside Gwladys Nocera and Lisa Hall. Kiki Schallenberg makes her first appearance as a pro on german soil and will start at 13:20 this afternoon.

Livescoring on the LET-Website is currently not available, but the tournament website offers a good hole-by-hole scoring.

Der Sprechgesangkünstler Thomas D. hat vor einigen Jahren ein Album mit dem Titel “Lektionen in Demut” aufgenommen. Das sollten Dennis und ich uns nun wohl mal zulegen und gründlich durchhören. Lars – genau wie ich Herausforderer um den Hubert-Cup am vergangenen Wochenende – hat uns deutlich gezeigt, wer in diesem Wettkampf Kaymer und wer Strüwer ist. Dennis ist den Pokal nun erst einmal los und ich, der ich Lars vor einigen Wochen auf dem Platz des Golfclubs Herzogstadt Celle noch mit einem Schlag Vorsprung nach 18 Löchern in die Schranken wies, habe den Pott nun also noch immer kein einziges Mal zu Hause gehabt.  

Das Ergebnis in Kürze: 2 Runden auf dem 9-Loch Kurzplatz von Sepp Mayer in Pankow waren zu spielen. Lars ging beide Runde jeweils mit einer 34 (und damit 4 über Par). Dennis und ich brachten es jeweils auf einen Schnitt von 38 Schlägen. Soweit so gut, nun kommt die Sache mit der Demut: Lars verließ die Runde nach dem Match mit den Worten “Übt ruhig noch ein wenig. Wer 33 schafft, bekommt den Cup kampflos”. Der Sonnenbrand ist nun abgeklungen, der längste Golf-Samstag meines Lebens zu Ende – und natürlich haben Dennis und ich den Score nicht unterbieten können. Und bei Gott, wir haben es versucht! Mehr mag ich dazu nicht schreiben.

Einige Sätze zum Kurzplatz: Die Bahnen in Pankow sind in der Tat zumeist kurz, das Holz kommt höchstens an zwei Bahnen sinnvoll zum Einsatz. Pflegezustand und insbesondere die Grüns sind prima. Die teilweise heftigen Wasserschäden vom Frühjahr sind hier und da noch zu sehen, kommen aber nicht ins Spiel. Mit 16 Euro für die Runde ist das Greenfee angemessen, aber auch nicht billig. Die Greenkeeper kümmern sich, sind aber – das gehört offenbar zu einem öffentlichen Platz dazu – wirklich stumpfe Gesellen, die uns zum Teil mit fünf lauten Miniautos umkreisten und wild entschlossen unsere Bahn pflegten, derweil acht andere Bahnen frei von Spielern waren. Die Gastronomie ist schlicht und angenehm dünkelfrei. Die Drivingrange ist günstig, bietet dafür aber nur Mattenabschläge*.

Fazit: Auf die 9-Loch-Anlage “am Flies” in Berlin darf jeder – und das ist schon mal schön. Das Klima ist prima, die Leute rufen in der Regel Fore und lassen bei Bedarf durchspielen. Der Platz ist für Trainings- und Matchzwecke perfekt geeignet, aber natürlich fehlt dem fortgeschrittenen Golfer glegentlich die Weite. Pluspunkt für alle Leute, die in Mitte oder Prenzlauer Berg wohnen: Sie können hier auch locker mal mit dem Fahrrad zum Golf. So soll es sein.   

* Edit – Korrektur: Man kann auch von Rasen abschlagen – am anderen Ende der Range.

While playing our After-Work-Golf-Round yesterday at the GC Gross Kienietz, we had an interesting visitor on the 6th green. A young fox strolled by, sniffed at our bags, looked at us an walked over the green just two meters away from us.

He didn’t seem scared or anything, he was just checking who’s visiting. Really interesting experience.

Apart from that, we had entertainment from the Patrouille Suisse, which was circling overhead (Air Force Golf revisited). The ILA is in town at the nearby airport Schönefeld and the Patrouille was giving their daily show.  Quite entertaining round it was.

Martin Kaymer will play in the upcoming World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. But apparently, not under a german flag as it reads here:

Congrats to Phil Mickeslon for winning the Colonial. He obviously was on a roll, just check out saturdays and sundays shot of the day were true beauties. The interview after saw him veeery relaxed.

Apart from that, Bernhard Langer came in second at the PGA Senior Championship after being in contention all week. A late bogey at 17 in his final round cost him the victory that was claimed by Jay Haas.

On the European Tour, Miguel Angel Jimenez took home the trophy in Wentworth and our Martin Kaymer showed a very stable performance in his first (was it?) appearance at the BMW PGA Championship. He seems to have locked himself in the Top 10 of the European Order of Merit. Keept it that way, Martin. We want to see you at Valhalla.

Breaking news: 3 von 5 Hubert-Cup-Spielern sind morgen früh am Start im Kampf um den Pokal. Drei kurzfristig angesetze Runden Zählspiel auf dem Kurzplatz von Sepp Maier am Flies. Erster Abschlag um 8.00 Uhr. Ausführlicher Spielbericht folgt. Ich hab meine Schläger gewaschen und will die beiden (Lars und Dennis) wegblasen! Drückt mir die Daumen! Lutz

I’m on my way to the airport right now, so I can’t give this a thorough examination, but maybe you give it a shot to follow the action at the Colonial (Alex Cejka is leading the tourney after 9 holes? WTF?).

Yesterday I went out for a quick 9 holes after work at GC Pankow, playing the back nine of the course. And on the last hole, a 148m par 3, a strange thing happened for the second time this year.

The hole plays towards the clubhouse and to the right side of the green you find the caddymasters barn. Pushing my 7 iron off the tee, I managed a direct hit into the side wall of the barn. I found my ball some 2 meters in front of the wall, but had a direct line onto the green. A gentle chip with the lobwedge left me a 1,5 meter putt that I was able to convert for par.

As I said, this was the second time already this happened to me. I’ll open up a new category for that, the barn-par.
