Golf in Wall

The newest golf course in Brandenburg opened this year in Wall (near Kremmen, 15 minutes off the A24 Berlin – Hamburg). Danish PGA Pro Flemming Maas currently overlooks a driving range and practice facilities and a nine hole course (Par 74, Slope 125, CR 70,7). As of August, the second nine holes will be opened, the third nine will complete the course in spring 2009.

The terrain offers no altitude changes, so the course is basically flat out, some elevated tee boxes give a little overview. Most fairways don’t have proper contours yet, fairways and greens need their time to grow in. Things do get interesting, when water comes into play. Several creeks and ponds split fairways and protect greens.

The holes are not particularly long, longest par 4 is 341 from yellow, so greens in regulation are an opportunity for the advanced golfer. I particularly liked the sixth hole, a slight dogleg right par 4 with the creek halving the fairway and a big pond protecting the second half of the fairway and the green from the right side.

The course didn’t have fairway markers and no birdiebook was available. So I had to play the course just guessing the lengths and properly judging my club selection. It worked out pretty well and felt more close to the origins of the game.

My nine holes came at the cost of € 12,00 (on weekdays), a very fair price for the nine holes. Give the course one or two years to grow in and it’ll become an interesting but fair course to play. I don’t know how the second nine holes will look like, but I’ll doubt that it will make the course a true championship course. So it will rather be your destination for a casual round with friends or family.

The clubhouse and driving range reflect Flemming Maas danish descent, being wooden houses painted in red and white. Very cosy and inviting for your after-round beer.

Golden Moment

Last week, as we finished our round we had a picturesque moment on the course. On the ninth green the sundown illuminated the putting surface in a golden glow andput a bright spot on the adjacent 18th green.

Sadly, I didn’t have my digital camera on me, so the pictures of my mobile have to suffice. Believe me, it was glorious!

Golf-Nerdiness

After some hectic two weeks, we finally come to settle down in our new domicile. There are still some things to unpack and lamps to mount etc., but most things are done. I even managed to squeeze in some nine holes tuesday at Golf Club Pankow, which is now practically around the corner. My game is completely in pieces, but I’ll have it checked next week by my swing doctor.

One of the very positive things in our new home is the way bigger closet we have. I now even have the space to dedicate an extra section to all my golf apparel and accessories. Like my drawer for golf balls, gloves and other stuff, loving it:

Priciest Golf Courses in the World

ABC News put together a list of the priciest golf courses in the world. To be honest, I don’t know of I would enjoy a round at a course where I have to pay $500 to get on. Especially when you have a bad golf day and hack around the 18 holes.

But I have to admit, there are some true beauties amongst them like Old Head Golf Links in Ireland. Just look at the pics on their website. Stunning.

Van de Velde qualifies for Open

Maybe he is happy that it isn’t played at Carnoustie this year.

Ausmisten
