Justin Rose - the defending champion at Valderrama - had a bad day yesterday. But it got worse today. At +19 after two days,  he’ll down a pint or two to forget this years tourney.

Welcome to the last Volvo Masters in Valderrama before the Race to Dubai starts in 2009.

Robert Karlsson will attempt to become Sweden’s first Order of Merit winner after a tremendous season, having accumulated 12 top-10 finishes and won back-to-back tournaments this season. Double major winner Padraig Harrington is second in the money list and needs to finish first or second to have a chance.

Lee Westwood, winner of the 2000 Order of Merit, also has a slight chance.  Should Westwood finish second this week, Karlsson would have to finish almost last to be overhauled by the Englishman.

Spains Miguel Angel Jimenez has only outsider chances at the Vardon Trophy.

We keep our fingers crossed for Robert Karlsson and of course for our Martin Kaymer.

Da Alex offenbar zu höflich ist, seinen Triumph hier angemessen darzustellen, übernehme ich das in aller Kürze. Nun denn:

Der Cup-Stifter ist zugleich der erste Champion. Alex kann die schöne Trophäe in seiner Schrankwand Eicherustikal gleich stehen lassen. Er hat zwar nicht den besten Score errungen, das hat erwartungsgemäß the royalandancient Karsten erledigt. Aber Alex hat einen satzungsgemäßen Joker geschossen. Der “nearest-to-the-pin” overruled den Score, so steht es geschrieben…und Alex war nearest. Meinen tiefen Respekt. Am entscheidenden Loch war ich leider nur “nearest-to-the-pond”, also mittendrin und damit wettbewerbstechnisch draußen. Immerhin: So wurde ich noch Dritter (von drei Teilnehmern).

Die Nebenwertungen:

Meine Herausforderung von Karsten (”Dich mach ich naß”) ist in die Hose gegangen. Er hat es geschafft, weniger als 112 Schläge zu benötigen und somit Anspruch auf eine Schlägerwäsche durch mich, das große Maul. Großmütig hat Karsten nach dem Match festgestellt, dass seine Schläger recht sauber seien. Dankeschön.

Bei den Skins-Games, die unser Flight nach Ende des letzten, amtlichen Loches ausspielten, hatte (”langweilig!!”) Alex die Nase vorn. Eine Wettschuld (10 Euro) steht noch aus, Schottenrock! Wettschulden sind Ehrenschulden, auch wenn Dein Schwung der schönste war!

Beim nächtlichen Leuchtballschießen hat Alex dann endlich mal was verkackt. Da gingen ihm die Nerven durch und das Geld an mich.

Allerdings punktete Alex dann gleich darauf in der Sonderwertung “nächtliche Fahrdienste”, indem er mich freundlicherweise noch zu meiner Familie brachte, die in einem gar nicht so nahe gelegenen FDJ-Heim kaserniert war. So kam ich am nächsten Morgen in den Genuss eines tollen Geigenkonzerts und der Familiensegen hängt grade. Details erspar ich euch.

Alles in allem: Danke Alex für die Auslobung des Cups, die Organisation der ersten Ausspielung, das Anleiern von Sponsoren für die Preise und überhaupt. Nur Dein Motorroller ist scheiße.

Well, the day is finally near, in two days time we will know the name of the winner of the Golf Blogger Cup 2008:

I tried to find the ugliest trophy around and whilst I was searching I bumped into some minibar bottles of fine Glenlivet whisky that will do as halfway drink for all participants in the Golf Blogger Cup. It will be played as part of the 3rd Royal Benzinger golf tournament next saturday at GC Prenden near Berlin. Eligible are all golf bloggers from Germany and abroad.

I was thinking about the format a while. One thing was clear: whoever wins the cup has to organize its vindication the next year. The best gross score may take the cup, but to spice things up there are two jokers: in case any participant wins “Nearest to the Pin” or “Longest Drive” the best gross score is overruled. We’ll see how it works out.
