Surely an interesting season it was this year with hard-fought battles of the course. Hard to pick the best shots of the year, according to the European Tour Website, these three are in contention:

• Graeme McDowell - Ballantine’s Championship, Day 4, 3rd extra playoff hole, Par 4, 2nd shot.
• Padraig Harrington - The 137th Open Championship, Day 4, 17th Hole, Par 5, 2nd shot.
• Padraig Harrington - US PGA Championship, Day 4, 17th Hole, Par 3, 1st shot

Wiesbaden, 18. November 2008. Deutschland bewirbt sich um die Durchführung des Ryder Cup im Jahr 2018. Dabei wird der Deutsche Golf Verband e.V. (DGV) von der Langer Golf GmbH (Bernhard und Erwin Langer) sowie der Professional Golfers Association of Germany (PGA of Germany) unterstützt. Am 10. Oktober 2008 wurde die offizielle Bewerbungsgesellschaft, die RC Deutschland GmbH, gegründet. Die RC Deutschland GmbH mit Sitz beim DGV in Wiesbaden bereitet von nun an die offizielle Bewerbung für die Ausrichtung des traditionellen Wettkampfes zwischen Europa und den USA für das Jahr 2018 in Deutschland vor.

Dr. Wolfgang Scheuer, Präsident des DGV: “Der Ryder Cup ist das weltweit größte Golfereignis. Seine Bedeutung reicht weit über den Golfsport hinaus. Es ist für uns Herausforderung und Ehre zugleich, uns für die Durchführung des traditionsreichen Ryder Cup im Jahr 2018 in Deutschland zu bewerben. Ein Ryder Cup in Deutschland hätte eine große Signalwirkung und würde einen enormen Schub für den deutschen Golfsport bedeuten.”

Bernhard Langer, deutsche Golfikone und selbst vielfacher Ryder Cup-Spieler sowie siegreicher Kapitän des Teams 2004: “Den Ryder Cup im Jahr 2018 nach Deutschland zu holen, ist unser aller erklärtes Ziel. Wir haben als Land in der Vergangenheit bewiesen, im Bereich von Sportgroßveranstaltungen Einzigartiges, nicht nur organisatorisch, sondern auch emotional, leisten zu können.”

Stefan Quirmbach, Präsident der PGA of Germany: “Es ist jetzt unsere Aufgabe, Politik und Wirtschaft für die Idee des Ryder Cup 2018 in Deutschland zu begeistern. Wenn uns das gelingt - und nur dann - haben wir eine sehr gute Chance, dass in Deutschland ein neues Golf-Zeitalter anbricht. Nicht erst 2018, sondern schon in den kommenden Jahren der Vorbereitung auf dieses Ereignis, das dem Golfsport in Deutschland zweifellos zu einem neuen Stellenwert verhelfen wird.”

Der Ryder Cup, neben den Olympischen Spielen und der Fußball-WM die größte mediale Sportveranstaltung der Welt, wird seit 1927 alle zwei Jahre im Wechsel in den USA und Europa durchgeführt. Auf dem europäischen Festland war bislang nur Spanien (Valderrama 1997) Gastgeber des Ryder Cup.

Nachdem inzwischen die offizielle Bewerbungsbestätigung durch den Veranstalter European Tour/Ryder Cup Ltd. vorliegt, wird die RC Deutschland GmbH in den kommenden Monaten den Kriterienkatalog bearbeiten, den die European Tour diese Woche allen Bewerbern an die Hand gegeben hat. Um diese Kriterien zu erfüllen, werden auch Politik und Wirtschaft intensiv in die Vorbereitungen mit einbezogen. Für eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung werden die Repräsentanten der RC Deutschland GmbH Gespräche auf kommunaler Ebene und auf Länderebene sowie mit der Bundesregierung führen. Für eine Austragung in Frage kommende Anlagen bzw. Planungen für zu errichtende Anlagen werden gesichtet, Partner und Sponsoren eingebunden und die seitens der European Tour geforderten Rahmenbedingungen umgesetzt.

An der Austragung interessierte Clubs und Anlagenbetreiber können sich bei der RC Deutschland GmbH schriftlich bewerben.

(story to follow, meanwhile, enjoy the picture) Well, what better way to end the season than to get together with good friends and golfing maniacs, hit a nice golf course and play a fun format like Texas Scramble.

My flightpartners Ecki and Sabine were really nice company on the course and we really matched in terms of play strategy. Ecki was the man for tremendous drives, his 260 meter drive into the fairway of the fourth hole  left not only us speechless but also the flight ahead of us (being invisible behind a tree line). My irons were the backup from the tee in case Eckis drives missed the fairway (which they rarely did), and Sabine complemented our game with nice approaches like the on on the 9th, where she put the ball some 1,5 meters close to the pin from the 130 meter mark.

We came round one over par and already dreamt of an even par round. Well, it didn’t quite work out on the back nine, we picked up shots on 10, 13, 17 and 18. But to play five over par with an aggregate handicap of 33 isn’t too bad. And it was enought to win the tournament

The best moment came on the 17th and 18th hole, where the sun was able to partly make its way through the clouds and provided us with the stunning light in the picture above. A nice evening and an early-bird-round on sunday morning rounded off a very nice weekend. Can’t wait to do it again!

Ecki already mentioned it today on fooore.de: we had the chance to play a new training club yesterday, the PSP golf training club.

Regular steel shaft, it has the loft of a seven iron but the club face is just a fraction bigger than a golf ball:

Essentially, there is no sweet spot as the whole club face is the sweet spot. So, if you don’t make accurate contact with the ball, poor or no ball flight will be the result. This may sound like the hard way to learn or improve your game, but when you’re able to hit the ball straight with this club you might as well go ahead and buy yourself a nice set of blades.

We did hit a couple of shots during our tournament round with the PSP and the result was almost identical to shots with my regular seven iron, a little shorter in distance though. The ball flight was more nervous compared to my regular shots, the ball meanderd through the air a little bit.

I didn’t test the club thoroughly enough to get some deeper insights, but Ecki will do that next week, so make sure to visit www.fooore.de for an update on this club.

Just in time between the seasons the European Tour relaunched its website yesterday.

Well, relaunch doesn’t really describe it well, it’s more like they took some blue paint and redecorated the exisiting website. What they missed is to rework the structure of the website, add some nice multimedia features or power up the existing ones. More picture galleries, bigger videos, maybe a media library, better design of the article pages, all these things are not to be found on the new website. Or in other words: they had a putt for eagle, but walked off the green with a double bogey.
