The FBR Open are being played this week on the PGA Tour and, as every year, everybody goes crazy about the 16th hole. There is not a fact that hasn’t been gathered about this hole, like Best career scores at TPC Scottsdale’s 16th hole, Worst career scores at TPC Scottsdale’s 16th hole, or Holes-in-one at TPC Scottsdale’s 16th hole.

The link that I am missing though is the livestream from #16, there has been one in the past years, where is it now?

“Caddyshack - Wahnsinn ohne Handicap”

USA 1980, Regie: Harold Ramis

Ein erfolgreicher Film, an dem sich die Geister scheiden. Für viele ist Caddyshack “das Golfmovie” schlechthin. Für andere ist der Film eine billig wirkende Produktion, in der ein paar Snobs Golf spielen, derweil der Greenkeeper bei der Jagd nach einem Erdhörnchen den Platz zerstört. Highlight des Films ist der auch im wahren Leben viel Golf spielende Schauspieler Bill Murray, der den zerstörerischen Platzwart darstellt.

Wer sich Caddyshack ansehen will, sollte den Film besser nicht mit der Erwartung in den DVD-Spieler schieben, dass sich nun Golfwelten eröffnen. Vielmehr eröffnet sich eine krass überzeichnete Wohlstandswelt der USA der 80er Jahre, die eine filmische Projektionsfläche für jede Menge Blödsinn darstellt. Für hiesige Golfer aber dennoch allemal interessant sind die Einblicke in die Welt des Caddytums, das hierzulande so gut wie gar nicht existiert.

Für Fans von Bill Murray ist das Werk, von dem es sogar eine Fortsetzung gibt, natürlich ein Muss. Wer aber echten Sport und eine handfeste Handlung liebt, hat mit dem Golf-Nonsense “Caddyshack” definitiv die falsche Wahl getroffen.

Well, just two weeks ago I wrote about Bernhard Langers look back on his 2008 season, wishing that he’d give us something to cheer about this year.

Looks like he heard us: congratulations to Bernhard on winning the first event of the year, the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Resort Golf Club, Hawaii.

It was quite an entertaining back nine to watch yesterday at the final round of the Qatar Masters. Oosthuizen, Stenson and Quiros gave each other a good fight, congratulations to Alvaro Quiros for the win.

But what struck me with disgust was the ugliness of some holes of the Doha Golf Club:

Take the eigth hole above as an example. What’s this built on a garbage dump? I know were in the desert here, but then work with it more properly, separate the wasteland better from the green, better male the tee boxes small green islands in the desert but don’t try to impersonate a fairway when it ends looking like this.

Second thing is that the course was separated by construction sites, not a very pretty sight to have around. I’d so much rather look at a venue like Wentworth or Valderrama. Don’t take it personal, my dear oil sheiks, but if you call it a Race to Dubai, you really might want people to do race there and not only for the money.

„Tin Cup“

Warum muss die Liebe ständig in alle tollen Dinge – wie zum Beispiel ins Golfspiel – reinfunken? Sie tut es, auch in diesem feinen Film, in dem Cevin Costner den starrsinnigen Range-Pro Roy McAvoy mimt, der sich in eine Schülerin (Rene Russo) verliebt, die zugleich seine Therapeutin und die Freundin seines ärgsten Golf-Widersachers ist.

Nun – so müssen Filme wohl aufgebaut sein, wenn sie im amerikanischen Kinomarkt punkten wollen. Aber das trübt den Kinospaß nur ein wenig. Seinsationell ist die Einleitung, die die ärmliche Golfrange-Romantik auf eine Weise in Szene setzt, dass jeder golfspielende Manager beim Zusehen überlegen dürfte, ob er nicht den Job tauschen sollte. Ein Gürteltier wandert geruhsam um die Zieltonnen der Driving-Range, die Sonne geht stilvoll unter und der Pro trinkt Bier mit seinen Kumpels und reißt Witze. „Letzte Drinving-Range vor der Wüste“ steht auf dem Schild. Die alten Neonlichter flackern. Männerglück.

Alles ist gut – wäre da nicht diese Frau, dieser Widersacher und die Gewissheit, dass der Range-Pro es bei den Open nicht doch jederzeit allen zeigen könnte, wenn er es wollte. Und er will, was dem Film reihenweise schöne Golfmomemte beschert. Das Highlight ist zweiffellos das Wasserhindernis auf dem letzten Loch, bei dem Held nicht vorlegen mag, auch wenn es sein Score locker erlaubt. Er muss rüber, muss…. auch wenn das eigentlich nicht geht. Wer sich in dieser Szene nicht wiedererkennt, hat noch kein Golf gespielt.

Der schnittigste Golffilm in dieser Auswahl. Punktabzüge gibt es nur für Rene Russo, die sich in die Rolle der aufgewühlt-freudigen Golffreundin eine Spur zu sehr hineingesteigert hat.

In the end it was closer than Paul Casey wished for, but he won by one shot. Casey struggled on the back nine of the final round, missing fairways and adding three bogeys to his scorecard. Martin was unable at that time to produce some birdies to take advantage. An eagle at the last hole put Kaymer in a tie for second with Luis Oosthuizen. Nevertheless a good start into the 2009 season for Kaymer, let’s see what he had to say in the post-round interview:

MARTIN KAYMER: I was struggling at birdies to putt him under pressure but I had a really good finish with the eagle and that was a nice moment, a little like last year with the spectators around me, so it was pretty cool.

Q. Some defence of your title, isn’t it, really?
MARTIN KAYMER: Kind of. I finished second but only one shot behind Paul Casey. But I’ll system really happy with the week.

Q. It’s not often somebody does follow-up with back-to-back victories, so you must be proud that you actually fought to the wire in the manner that you have?
MARTIN KAYMER: Honestly I feel a little pressure on Thursday because I had a lot of phone calls, e-mails, and there were so many people were looking after me that week. So I felt a little pressure, but I think I handled it very well.

Q. And you’ll be in that position again, won’t you?
MARTIN KAYMER: It’s good. That’s why I’m practicing so hard, and I always want to be in this position and now I am in this position and I will be in Munich in this position, as well. It’s good, though.
