That’s a wrap in Munich

Nor Retief Goosen neither Bernhard Langer could secure the trophy in Munich. Nick Dougherty claimed the victory in Munich-Eichenried. A fine 64 secured his win by one shot, in his round he his lead was sometimes as high as fou shots. But Argentines Rafale Echenique probably shot the best back nine of his career: 27 shots equaled the European Tour record, four birdies, one eagle and one albatros. His 243 yard three iron completed a round of 62. Fuck, 27 shots for 9 holes!!!!

But you seriously have to admire Bernhard Langer for his performance, not only does he rock the Champions Tour in the US, but at age 52 still manages to be in contention on the European Tour. He played rounds of 68-68-65 and 72, two bogeys on 17 and 18 moved him down from T4 to T9, but still a top 10 finish is great! As he once said: “There’s still plenty of good golf in this old body!”

At some point through the third round, when Bernhard Langer had clawed his way back into serious contention in an European Tour event, the commentators wondered whether a 51-year-old winning would be like egg on the face for the rest of the field. I am glad they only flirtered with that possibility for just a little while before the conceded that reality would be something different. I think, in all honesty, the players would just have stood and applauded the efforts of a man who has not lost a bit of that competitive spirit in all these years.

The remarkable fact has been that throughout his career, there have been so many phases when he has been affected by some part of his game suddenly going completely off-colour but each time he has come back and come back really strong. Start of the final day, he probably must have had all of Germany rooting for him. But the Englishman Nick Dougherty, who was in contention a few backs, this time was not going to let an opportunity slip away and played a near-perfect final round, notwithstanding that miraculous run by Rafa Echenique on the back-nine.

    Cheers
