Golfclub Waldbrunnen

Last week I was attending a conference at the Dorint Golf & Spa Windhagen / Siebengebirge, some 30 minute drive outside of Cologne. Somehow I had my golf clubs with me and surprisingly, the hotel was adjacent to a golf course belonging to the Golfclub Waldbrunnen.

The layout of the course is kind of funny, as it is separated by the city of Hallerbach:

So, leaving the 7th green you have a 10 minute walk ahead of you through the village before you reach the 8th tee. We only played nine holes, so the recommended schedule was 1-7 and 17-18 to bring us back to the hotel. My playing partner Walter – a 9.7 handicapper – had played the course a couple of times before and was helpful with advice around the course. This came in very helpful as the course is situated on some quite hilly terrain that requires some blind shots and good ball placement.

Judging by the nine holes we played, the course is really interesting. Uphill, downhill, hazard, tree-lines, 90° doglegs, the course gave you always something to think about. The funniest thing happened on the third hole. I pushed my tee shot right and it landed on the fringe of the second green. From there I tried to hit a sandwedge over the treeline back into the third fairway, but I totally shanked the ball to the right where it flew right through 15 meters of forest without hitting a tree and landed five meters in front of the third green. How impossible a shot was that?

My favorite holes were #7 and #17. The seventh is the first par five and stretches some 472 meters of narrow fairway with sidehill lies towards a very well protected green. I played an 8, but I enjoyed it. The seventeenth - our eight – is a 120 meter par 3. No big deal one would say but the green is some 15 meters higher than the teebox. An interesting view of which I can only offer you a crappy iPhone picture, as I had no other camera with me.

With 27,00 € for nine holes on weekdays you are charged a fair price for the course. Practice facilities are not the most ample, but sufficient. When we played, the course was very wet. I cannot say much about the weather the days before or whether the course has a drainage problem, but apart from that, the condition of the course was very good.
