Wartime Golf

Another gem dug out by Devil Ball Golf: special wartime golf rules. “Ball moved by enemy action”, who would think of something like that nowadays.

Golfclub St. Pauli Clubhouse-Truck

Since its foundation in 2006, the GC St. Pauli prides itself in not being your average golf club. My wife and I are members since year one and our sons both held the title of youngest member at their time. Play hard and party hard: something I definitely relate to.

This year, the club came up with something even more surprising and outstanding than before. They remodeled an old semi-trailer into the first mobile golf clubhouse evar! Including bar, merchandise shop, rooftop terrace and putting green.

Oh, and not to forget: the clubhouse also provides the storage for the Astra beer golf cart while on the road. Find plenty of pics and the whole story over at the GCSP website.

Golf & Cruise

So I got talked into spending my easter vacation on a cruise ship. Golf trips, golf pro and practice facilities aboard were the striking arguments for me. In advance, I already booked two golf trips. On our stop in Madeira to the Palheiro Golf Club and on our stop in Cadiz to the Golfo di Novo Sancti Petri, a famous Seve Ballesteros design.

On the boat I went to the golf counter to pick up my vouchers for the golf trips and met golf pro Florian Apfelbacher. He explained, that – so far – he had very few bookings for the golf trips (there were five different trips offered on the ten day cruise). In fact, I was the only person that had booked on the entire ship. Out of roughly 2.300 passengers, I was the only golfer? He had to be kidding me, but he wasn’t. Florian told me, that the first trip to Palheiro Golf would take place as the captain himself would join us for the round (review to follow). A couple of days later I received the cancellation for the Novo Sancti Petri trip, as nobody except for me had signed up and a minimum of three players would be necessary to make it happen. Let me repeat myself: out of 2.300 passengers, I was the ONLY golfer?

Maybe the golfers that were aboard were repelled by the onboard advertising for the golf trips: “Dude, when all those hackers hold their club and swing like that, then I’m not coming!”:

AIDA golf

Disappointed as I was I looked for alternatives. There was a sports deck on board, where a so-called “outdoor driving cage” was installed. Nothing other than a practice mat surrounded by nets. But still it was an opportunity to practice. So on the second sea day I grabbed three clubs and went to hit some balls. One thing that I previously didn’t think about: being on a ship there was constant movement. We didn’t have high waves or strong winds but still there was an up and down and sideways rolling of the vessel that you had to compensate. As if swinging a golf club and hitting the ball properly isn’t hard enough when the soil isn’t moving. But it turned out to be a fun practice routine, working on a solid stance!

Still, I would have wanted more from my vacation, golf-wise. Maybe we just had a bad timing and all the other ships are packed with golfers. Or maybe it is just the cruise clientele? I’m not sure. Do you have any experiences?

Not your usual golf course design features

Devil Ball Golf put together some interesting golf cours “oddities”, the Kelani Valley Railroad crossing various fairways at the Royal Colombo Golf Club in Sri Lanka is one of my favourites!

Maybe next time they could try it with hammer throw. Although the pitch marks might be a little big then!
